Hundreds of elderly residents across Wokingham have been ‘marooned’ by changes to travel concessions, claims an opposition councillor.
Travel tokens, which older folk could use to pay for bus, taxi and train fares, were scrapped by Wokingham Borough Council last April.
The means-tested tokens were replaced with bus passes for all over-60s, although disabled people continue to receive the service.
Kevin Mercer, head of revenue and benefits at the council, said the move would save the council around £140,000 a year over three years and claimed some residents were saving their tokens to “pay for a taxi to the airport for their summer holiday”.
However Councillor Stephen Conway, Liberal Democrat representative for Twyford, said the token had been a ‘lifeline’.
