CANTERBURY MP Julian Brazier says that pensioners on housing benefit should not be exempt from the bedroom tax and forced to downsize to make way for young families.
The Conservative backbencher said that he is “not happy” OAPs are exempt as Prime Minister David Cameron said he could not guarantee the future of winter fuel allowances and free bus passes.
Approximately 40 per cent of social housing claimants are pensioners with an estimated 1.3 million potentially eligible for the charge.
Mr Brazier, MP for Canterbury, wrote in a letter to a constituent: “There are 250,000 social housing tenants living in overcrowded accommodation and over two million people on waiting lists.
“It is unacceptable for the Government to subsidise people to live in accommodation that is too big for their needs.
Our comment: Pensioners in Canterbury may wish to keep this in mind at the next election.
